The Hidden Gap Holding High Achievers Back

with Gary Gillan and Dr. LaChelle Wieme

Are you waiting to feel confident before you finally take the next step? In this powerful conversation on The Best You with Gary Gillan, I unpack why confidence does not come before action, it is created through action. I share how fear, overthinking, and the need to control every outcome can keep high-achieving women stuck in hesitation, even when they know they are meant for more.

In this episode, I open up about my own journey from a successful anesthesia career into entrepreneurship, and how I learned to trust the internal nudges that were guiding me toward a bigger, more aligned life. Through my signature blend of brain science, faith, identity work, and practical strategy, I explain how women can stop outsourcing their authority and start making decisions from a regulated, grounded, empowered place.

We also dive into my evolving work around identity recalibration, a process that helps women stop energizing what feels broken and instead embody the version of themselves who already knows how to move with clarity, courage, and confidence. It is not about becoming someone new. It is about remembering who you already are underneath the fear, doubt, and pressure.

In this episode, you’ll hear:

- Why fear often comes down to believing you cannot handle the outcome

- How tiny aligned steps build real confidence over time

- Why regulating your nervous system helps you make clearer, more powerful decisions

- How identity work can shift the way you show up in business, relationships, and life

If you have been stuck in overthinking, waiting for the “perfect” plan, or letting fear make your decisions, this episode is your reminder that you already have access to more wisdom, strength, and clarity than you think. Listen in and discover how to step into your next aligned action as the most powerful version of you.

The Hidden Gap Holding High Achievers Back, with Gary Gillan and Dr. LaChelle Wieme

[00:45] Moving From Overthinking to Aligned Action
Gary Gillan opens The Best You by introducing Dr. LaChelle Wieme as a motivational speaker, author, podcast host, peak performance coach, and founder of i-AM Life by Design. He shares how LaChelle helps ambitious women move from overthinking into confident, aligned action by combining brain science, faith, high-performance habits, and practical strategy.

[02:38] The Nudge That Changed Everything
LaChelle shares that her move from anesthesia into entrepreneurship happened “by accident, but also by design.” Although she loved her career as a professor and nurse anesthetist, she felt a persistent nudge in 2016 to start an online business. Even though she had no sales experience and felt like an awkward introvert, she chose to get curious and follow the pull that would eventually lead her toward what she calls the “and life.”

[04:47] Discovering the “And Life”
LaChelle explains that entrepreneurship showed her she did not have to choose between feeling challenged, fulfilled, impactful, and being a present mom and wife. She reflects on how much of her previous success had been rooted in proving her worth through degrees, career accomplishments, committees, and constant achievement. Building a business helped her begin questioning who she really was, how she was wired, and what alignment could look like.

[06:38] Big Buts and the Fear of Starting
When Gary asks how she moved from hearing the nudge to actually acting on it, LaChelle talks about the “big buts” that keep people stuck: “I would do this, but I’m not ready,” “but I need another certification,” or “but I need more money first.” She explains that fear often comes from believing we will not be able to handle the outcome. Once she looked honestly at the worst-case scenario, she realized it was not nearly as catastrophic as her mind had made it.

[08:30] One Tiny Aligned Step at a Time
LaChelle shares that everything she has built came from taking one tiny aligned step at a time. She reminds listeners that confidence is not created before action. Confidence is created through action. Each step gives people evidence that they can handle what happens, learn from it, and choose the next aligned move.

[09:49] Aligned Action Instead of Doing All the Things
LaChelle explains that high achievers often fall into all-or-nothing patterns. They try to read every book, listen to every podcast, hire every coach, and do every strategy, then wonder why they feel burned out. Instead, she encourages listeners to pay attention to the small nudges, the serendipitous moments, and the aligned next step that keeps showing up.

[14:25] Fear, Control, and Two-Way Risk
LaChelle and Gary discuss the discomfort of not knowing exactly how things will unfold. LaChelle explains that fear is often tied to control and the belief that uncertainty means we will not be able to handle what happens. When she left her anesthesia career, a friend helped her see that it was a two-way risk. If it did not work out, she could go back. That realization helped her stop catastrophizing and move forward.

[16:35] Identity as the Missing Piece
LaChelle introduces the identity recalibration work that has become central to her coaching. She explains that she has spent years helping people identify excuses, roadblocks, mindset blocks, and limiting beliefs. But she realized that focusing too much on what needs to be fixed can re-energize the problem. Instead, she now helps clients shift into the identity of the person they want to be.

[19:23] Why Identity Comes Before Results
LaChelle explains that thoughts, feelings, actions, and results all matter, but identity is the first domino. If someone’s confidence depends on external results, it can collapse when things take longer than expected or when someone says no. But when identity is rooted in “I am capable, I am called, I am someone who makes a difference,” the foundation becomes more stable.

[23:17] Inside the Identity Recalibration Process
Gary asks how LaChelle helps people shift identity in less than an hour. LaChelle shares that the process begins with intention: who does the person want to be? From there, she helps them access a memory or inherited strength where that identity already exists. Instead of becoming someone new, they begin remembering who they have always been.

[26:30] Somatic Anchoring and Future Identity
LaChelle explains that once clients connect with the identity they want to embody, she helps them create a somatic anchor, a physical way to remember what that version of themselves feels like. Then she guides them into applying that identity to their future self, including how they stand, behave, dress, lead, and make decisions.

[28:36] You Already Have Everything Inside of You
Gary reflects that people have access to more information, insight, and wisdom than they realize. LaChelle agrees and emphasizes that people already have everything inside of them. Limiting beliefs, old patterns, and programming simply block access to that truth. When people reconnect with their inner guidance, they can make faster decisions, show up more confidently, and stop spiraling down.

[32:54] Remembering Confidence Through the Body
LaChelle shares the example of a client in her seventies who reconnected with a memory of being sixteen and feeling confident as a cheerleader. By remembering how that version of herself stood, moved, and felt, she was able to use that physical posture as an anchor. LaChelle explains that this is how small identity-based actions create big shifts over time.

[35:42] Visualization, Nervous System Regulation, and Spiral Up
LaChelle explains that the brain does not know the difference between what is real and what is imagined, which makes visualization a powerful tool for rehearsing success. She then connects this to nervous system regulation, reminding listeners that when they are dysregulated, their brains cannot think clearly. Instead of shaming themselves for spiraling down, they can regulate first, then choose who they want to be.

[37:30] Breathing Your Way Back to Clarity
LaChelle offers simple ways to regulate the nervous system, including deep breathing and activating the vagus nerve. She explains that once the body calms down, blood flow returns to the prefrontal cortex, allowing clearer thinking, better decisions, and more empowered action.

[38:00] Free Will as a Superpower
LaChelle shares one of her core beliefs: every person has the superpower of free will. In every moment, people get to choose whether they respond as a victim or a victor. Even when choosing feels hard, they can begin by calming the body, taking a breath, and choosing one solution-oriented next step.

[39:17] Three Affirmations for Every Limiting Belief
LaChelle gives listeners three simple affirmations that she believes cover every limiting belief: I am safe. I am capable. I am worthy. She explains that these statements help calm fear, rebuild self-trust, and remind people that they are not in danger, they have handled hard things before, and they are worthy of the life they desire.

[41:20] Acting as If You Are Already Her
When Gary asks about one regular practice that helps LaChelle become the best version of herself, she comes back to identity. She explains that it is not about doing more so you can finally have what you want. It is about asking, “Who do I need to be?” and then acting from that identity now.

[42:15] Queen Energy Over Proving Energy
LaChelle shares that one of her chosen identity anchors is “queen energy.” To her, the queen is poised, confident, warm, magnetic, humble, vulnerable, and self-assured. She contrasts this with the part of a person that gives away pieces of themselves to be liked, approved of, or seen as worthy. Her daily practice is asking whether she is making decisions from fear or from her queen identity.

[44:02] Where to Connect With LaChelle
LaChelle closes by inviting listeners to connect with her at LaChelleWieme.com and on social platforms under her name. She also shares the opportunity to apply for an identity gap assessment, where she helps people identify what is keeping them from embodying the identity they are ready to step into.
